New way explains that cholesterol lowering drugs not statins that target nuclear receptors may be able to reduce bad LDL cholesterol. Cholesterol is an essential component in the cell membrane of Atherosclerosis (buildup of plaque in the arteries) and is the result of an imbalance in cholesterol metabolism. Drugs such as statins can reduce levels of LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein) and the risk of atherosclerosis. But not everyone can treated and some patients discontinue their statins because of side effects.
